Czech painter, book illustrator and writer, older brother of Karel Čapek.
He was born 23.3. 1887 in Hronov. He died in April 1945 in Bergen-Belsen. Josef Čapek graduated from the weaving school in Vrchlabí. Then he relocated to Prague in 1904, where he enrolled in the study of paintings and drawings at UMPRUM. During his studies, he spent a year in Paris where he met many world famous artists. His artwork represents one of the peaks of Czechoslovak modern art. Čapek's work is specific in its combination of several artistic styles, most dominant of which is Cubism.
